Dear Sue:

It was nice to hear from you again, though distressing to hear
that you are in a difficult situation.

My own news is that I'm still here, still working on formalizing
common sense. I married again in 1983, and my wife Carolyn Talcott,
who also does computer science, and I have a three month old son Timothy.

Your results about fitting straight lines are new to me, but
I'm afraid that doesn't mean much. I'll try to get someone else who
knows the field better to take a look.

Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to offer you a job,
partly because I dissolved the Stanford Artificial Intelligence
in 1980 when I couldn't get a suitable person to replace me as
head of it. The component parts seemed to get along fine without
an overall structure. The other reason is that my present interests
are somewhat specialized.

\closing
Best regards,

John McCarthy
